Downtown Ft. Lauderdale was a 9-5 office community until things picked up in the housing market a decade ago. Now there is activity and life in most every corner of the city day and night. The center of the action is the Riverwalk, which meanders along the New River through downtown east to west. Many new modern high-rise condos have sprung up along this incredible path, mostly on the north side, but there are several on the south as well. From the luxurious River House to the more modest Symphony, there are many good options for urban condo living on or close to the water!

Watching the boats go by on the river from your balcony is a very relaxing way to spend an afternoon and the river twists and bends so it is kept in sight from many vantage points. Many of the newer condominiums have amazing amenities with all of the comforts of a fine resort and the restaurants and nightlife within walking distance will only get better and more abundant. Elegant shops and restaurants along the western end of Las Olas and a more youthful bar district on SE 2nd St compliment the urban residential district along the river.

There is not much dockspace available for your average condo dweller downtown so if you had a boat you would have to keep it at one of the nearby marinas. If you had the cash to have a captain, he could just pick you up at the community dock in front of your building! Depending on where you’re departing from, you’ll need to pass under some downtown bridges. All bridges downtown open on demand and it takes about 25 minutes to get out to sea from here. The SW 4th Ave bridge has a 20’ clearance, the railroad bridge is left up unless there is a train passing through, in which case you don’t want to try going under the 4’ clearance even if you could fit; the S. Andrews Ave. bridge has a 21’ clearance, and the SE 3rd Ave. bridge is 16’. After this, you will still have to pass under the 17th St. Causeway with its 55’ clearance when it’s closed.
