The central beach of Ft. Lauderdale has been at the heart of the action since Paula Prentiss and the girls came down to find out Where the Boys Are in the early 60’s. It has gone through many changes along the way with a large variety of mostly temporary inhabitants from all age retirees to international visitors looking for a vacation home on the beach. Many new shops, restaurants, and bars/clubs have begun sprouting up to go along with the classic Elbow Room and older establishments so there’s never a lack of things to do.

In the past 10 years, the beach has begun another transition from low-rise condos and older hotels built in the 60’s and 70’s to modern mid-rise designer condos, hotels, and resorts like the W, Trump International Hotel, and the Hilton. One new trend is the condo/hotel so when your not here, your condo is put into a rental pool and you reap the benefits! Just off the beach, there are many options available from luxury townhomes on the intercoastal waterway to less expensive condos in older low-rise developments a short walk from the beach.

The only thing between you and the open ocean is the 17th St. Causeway with its 55’ clearance when it’s closed. It will open upon request anytime at 15 min. intervals if necessary.  It takes about 10 minutes to get out to sea. Dockage for anything from a dingy to a mega-yacht is available in the many marinas along the intercoastal including world famous Bahia Mar where another new development is planned. It takes about 15 minutes to get out to sea from here.

To the north is the beautiful Birch State Park offering residents a welcome respite from the sun with walking/biking/rollerblading trails and picnic spots just off the beach. South Beach Park is at the southern end where you can play volleyball, enjoy a beach BBQ, or watch the kite-surfers fly! The shops of Las Olas and the Galleria Mall are within 5 minutes by car and downtown Ft. Lauderdale or the International Airport is just 15 minutes away.
